デスクトップLinuxが盛り上がるとすれば

Mitch Kaporのリーダーシップで準備された「Desktop Linux Technology and Market Overview」(PDFファイルで34ページ)が、ネット上に公開されている。7月10日付けの最新資料。デスクトップLinuxに関心のある方には必読の資料だろう。

ちなみに、Mitch Kapor(Lotus創業者、Lotus 1-2-3開発者)はいま、オープンソースでMS Outlookキラーの開発を進めている。4月には、OSAF(Open Source Applications Foundation)がPIMプラットフォーム「Chandler」のRelease 0.1を公開した。

Mitch Kaporは、この資料の序文で、デスクトップLinuxについて、

「As you can read, while we do not believe a revolution is in the offing, there is a great deal of good news about what has already been accomplished, and even more about what is very likely going to be happening with adoption of desktop Linux, especially considering the situation outside the U.S. A further piece of good news is that, by and large, there do not appear to be intractable obstacles to the continuing growth of adoption of Linux as an end-user OS.」

デスクトップLinuxを盛り上げる8つの要素

第4章が面白い。

「We do not believe that there will be a killer app that will propel Linux desktop adoption. For one thing, innovative applications, especially open source ones, tend to be network-oriented and can be relatively easily ported to different operating systems. Instead, we believe that a number of factors and trends will lead to more broad-based adoption of Linux as a client user environment. It remains to be seen what the relative strength of these factors will be, and how powerful their cumulative impact will be.」

何かキラーアプリケーションが1つ生まれて、デスクトップLinuxがぐっと盛り上がるということではなく、さまざまな要因が重なり合って徐々に市場に浸透していく。その要素としては、次の8要素を挙げている。

(1) The success of Linux as a server computing platform

サーバーでの成功により、Linux世界の生態系(エコシステム)がしっかり成長してきた。

(2) The emergence of credible desktop offerings, including the availability of solid productivity applications that interoperate with their Windows counter-parts

KDE とGNOME がある程度成熟してきた。そして、

という具合に道具立てが揃ってきた。

(3) The commodification of the operating system

激しい進化を続けていた一時期に比べて、デスクトップOS自身の進化は止まり、成熟化した。そうなればキャッチアップするLinuxデスクトップ側にもチャンスが出てくる。

(4) Structural challenges for the monopoly provider

独占者マイクロソフトは成熟市場で現在の時価総額を維持するためには相変わらず強気なライセンス戦略を取り続けなければならない。そこにLinuxデスクトップの付け入る隙がある。

(5) The falling cost of personal computers

ハードウェアはもうウォルマートで200ドルで売られるようになって、マイクロソフトのソフトウェアが最も高価なコンポーネントとなった。マージンの薄いベンダー、価格に敏感なユーザはLinuxを選択肢として考えるようになる。

中国では94%のビジネスソフトが海賊版である。「people will switch from pirated software to the most inexpensive legal solution.」つまり、海賊版から最も安いソリューションへの転換が、Linuxのチャンスになる。

この8要素が、絡み合いながら(どういう絡み合い方をするかはわからないが)、デスクトップLinuxが市場に浸透していくだろうと予測する。

3段階の市場浸透サイクル

そして市場浸透サイクルとして、フェーズを浸透する顧客層から、3つに分けている。

Phase 1: Highly technical users

Phase 2: Transactional workers, web-centric consumers

Phase 3: Knowledge workers, small businesses, mainstream consumers

現在がPhase 1で、2004年からPhase 2にスタートし、アメリカでは2007年まではPhase 3に移行することはなかろう、と予測している。デスクトップLinux浸透サイクルはかなり息の長いストーリーになるわけだ。

そして第6章の「The Desktop Linux Eco-system」も面白い。

デスクトップLinuxが市場浸透していくために必要な生態系の要素がきちんとリストアップされている。

あと面白いのは第8章の第3節のレバレッジ・ポイントという部分。
