コモディティ化時代のソフトウェア開発

OSCON(O'Reilly Open Source Convention)で、Tim O'Reillyが先週行なったキーノートスピーチの内容が明らかになった。

本欄7月7日の「オープンソースが引き起こすパラダイムシフト」でご紹介したTim O'Reillyのインタビューは、このOSCONに先駆けて行なわれたものであった。

スピーチ内容の中で、事前のインタビュー内容と重ならない新しい部分、インタビュー内容を補足する部分を拾っていくことにしよう。

これからのオープンソース・ソフトウェア開発

まずは「OSCON: Paradigm Shift in Open Source」から。

「"Open architecture inevitably leads to interchangable parts." He further calls on open source developers to create plug compatible software components that give users more flexibility over the composition and configuration of software systems.」

Timは、オープンソース開発者に対し、プラグ・コンパチブル・ソフトウェア・コンポーネントを作るよう呼びかけた。

そして、「3つのC」という表現を使って、これからのソフトウェアについて展望した。「3つのC」とは、Commoditization、Customizable systems、Collaborationである。

「Commoditization of software -- create plug compatible software components and foster competition by avoiding vendor lock in.」

「User Customizable systems -- interchangable components give users more power in creating software systems that are more flexible than off-the-shelf solutions.」

「Network enabled Collaboration -- tools like Rendezvous, Hydra and wikis will allow distributed teams to be more effective and will help to bridge geographic and timezone gaps.」

そして、結論として、「そろそろオープンソースの将来や、コモディティソフトの概念や、コードよりもデータのほうが重要になる(AmazonやGoogle)という考え方をいかにして受容していくかについて、きちんと考え始める時期だ。コミュニティはパラダイムシフトを予期し、この変化を是として受容していかなければならない」と語ったようである。

「Its time to think about the future of open source and how to embrace the concepts of commodity software and that data is becoming more important than code, as Amazon and Google are demonstrating with their web service APIs. It's important for the community to anticipate this paradigm shift and to be ready embrace this change.」

PC産業のコモディティ化の歴史は繰り返す

Mitch RatcliffeのBlogでは、いま起ころうとしているソフトウェアのコモディティ化を、PC産業のコモディティ化の歴史になぞらえて議論するTimの論点を正確な英語で再現してくれている。

「Tim says think of the ways the rules changed with the IBM PC. First IBM introduced the PC in 1982, based on standard parts and released the spec, changing all the rules of the computer industry. Before that you had to build your own integrated OS and hardware (not quite -- UNIX demonstrates otherwise). Says Apple is the last survivor of the proprietary model -- what about Darwin? -- but IBM/Microsoft still own 95 percent of the market (leaving, by extension to this statement, Linux with all of two percent, which is low).

Michael Dell's innovation was making a better process for building standardized PCs. This is a shift in power in the personal computer space from Apple to IBM to Dell.... The branding of components, like "Intel Inside" will point to the way to a successful Open Source strategy.」

"Intel Inside"戦略は、コンポーネントのブランド化、と表現するのか、となるほどと思う。

「In the same way that the PC led to open hardware architectures (even at Apple, where memory and PCI and so forth are standardize now -- yes I am typing on a Mac). Now the move is to open softwarte architectures. The era of proprietary APIs as a key to advantage is ending, Tim says.」

PC産業でハードアーキテクチャに起きたのと同じことが、これからソフトでも起こる。

eWeekの「O'Reilly Gazes Into the Future of Open Source」は、もう少し記事っぽく仕上げた長い文章である。

「コードよりもデータのほうが重要になる」ということを、より明確な文章で表現している。

「The new rules governing the Internet paradigm shift are based on the fact that an open architecture inevitably leads to interchangeable parts; competitive advantage and revenue opportunities move "up the stack" to services above the level of a single device; information applications are decoupled from both hardware and software; and lock-in is based on data and not on proprietary software, he said.」

競争優位と売り上げ機会はサービス層に移行し、プロプラエタリソフトのレベルでのロックインではなく、データレベルでのロックインが起こる。

PC産業におけるデルモデルに相当するものを、いつ誰がオープンソースの世界で成し遂げるのだろう、と問う。

「"When is someone going to come along and build a Dell-like solution for open source; that new process of assembling on the fly? It's about building Linux as a process rather than as a product,"」

Linuxもコンポーネントに

OSCON直前の彼のインタビュー記事では、

「Instead of seeing Linux as a product, he sees Linux as a set of commodity software components he can put together for different purposes.」

という表現をしている。Linuxを製品としてみるのではなく、Linuxを別の目的で組み合わせることが可能なコモディティ・ソフトウェア・コンポーネントとしてみること。ここで「he sees」となっている「he」とは、「Ian Murdock, the guy who started Debian, and now runs a company called Progeny Linux Systems」、つまり、Debianプロジェクトの創始者であるIan Murdockのことで、彼が創業したProgeny Linux Systemsが、この正しい方向性を追求するベンチャーだと、Timは評価している。

さて、そのIan Murdockについて調べていたら、先月から彼がBlogを書き始めているとことがわかった。いろいろたどっていくと何でもつながっていく時代になったなぁ、という感慨があるが、彼のBlogを全部読んでみると、明らかに彼はデルモデルを意識していることがわかる。たとえば、6月6日に彼はこんなことを書いている。

「If you're in the technology business, you can either try to stay ahead of the commoditization curve, or you can embrace the inevitable commoditizing effect and try to build your business model around it. In the end, the former is a difficult proposition. EMC made a fortune selling proprietary hardware in a commoditized hardware business, but now it’s under attack from below by Network Appliance, and NetApp will soon be under attack from below by vendors selling commodity NAS devices based on industry standard PC hardware, Linux, and Windows. Meanwhile, Dell has thrived, not by fighting commoditization, but by embracing it.」

テクノロジービジネスにおいて、コモディティ化カーブの最先端を走り続けるか、それとも避けられないコモディティ化をembraceして、その概念の周囲に新しいビジネスモデルを構築するか、2つに1つしかない。デルは、コモディティ化と戦ったのではなく、embraceしたのだ。Embraceという言葉は、Tim O'Reillyの文章の中にも出てきたが、「(嫌かもしれないが)そのありのままを受け入れて抱きしめて、それを前提に生きていく」というような意味を含む言葉である。たとえば、「レコード業界はファイル交換をembraceせよ」みたいな使い方もする。

ところで、Progeny Linux Systems社のウェブサイトをみると、確かに、

「Progeny's new web-based Linux Platform Manager simplifies the time-consuming and expensive process of creating, testing, and maintaining a custom Linux distribution. The Linux Platform Manager tool gives subscribers a direct link to Progeny's Platform Services componentized Linux.」

とある。

Ian Murdockは、7月6日のBlogの中で、

「If you've spent any time at all in the open source business, you've no doubt heard this question as many times as I have: "So, how do you make money from free software?"

この分科会の詳細までは、さすがにネット上でオープンにはなっていないようである。

このあたりまで予習して初めて、真の難問について議論するFace to faceのミーティングに真の意味が出てくる。そういう時代になったのである。
