QoSなしでもVoIPは上手くいく

Dan Bricklinの「Quality of Service is in the ear of the beholder」というBLOGを読んでみよう。タイトルは僕には難解だった(正直に言えば)。

PC上にインストールしてある英辞郎で調べてみると、「Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 《諺》美は見る人の目の中にある、人の好みはさまざま。」とある。なるほど。このエッセイは、Voice Over IPの話なので、この諺をもじって、「Quality of Serviceは、聞く人の耳の中にある」と理解すればいいとわかった。文章は平易でわかりやすい。

Dan Bricklinという人は、1970年代半ば、ハーバードビジネススクールの学生だったとき、財務モデルの計算に辟易してVisiCalcを構想。友人のBob Frankstonが実際のVisicalcを開発した。

このDanとBobはそれ以来の親友なのだろう。一緒にwww.satn.orgというサイトを運営して、オピニオンを継続的に発表している。

Danは、自分のBLOGも持つようになってもいて、ビジョナリーとして定評のある人である。

米国で盛り上がるQoS対E2Eの議論

Quality of Service(QoS)については、アスキーデジタル用語辞典をご参照。ただ、QoSについて今、米国であれこれと議論が沸きあがっている背景は、ローレンス・レッシグ「コモンズ」の第3章「電線上のコモンズ」をぜひご参照されたし。余談だが、「コモンズ」という本は、「ネット上の所有権強化は技術革新を殺す」というサブタイトルや、レッシグ教授が法律家であることから、著作権関係の専門書と受け取られている面もあるかもしれないが、前半のインターネットについての解説は、技術的なことも含め、噛んで含んで説明しており、啓蒙書としても素晴らしい。

ポイントは、QoSというアーキテクチャ変更が、インターネットのEnd to end(E2E)アーキテクチャを損なう概念であり、イノベーションを阻害するに違いないという立場である。その意味では、レッシグ教授とこのBLOGの筆者Dan Bricklinの立場は同じである。

「QOS is often given as a reason why Voice Over IP (VoIP) isn't ready for widespread use. It's also given as the reason all sorts of "special" features have to be added to Internet connectivity, breaking the End-to-End Argument.」

第2パラグラフで、さっそくEnd-to-Endの話が出てくる。(ちなみにEnd-to-EndのAdvocateたちはかなりたくさん居て、ネット上にも質の高い論文がたくさん発表されているので、いずれご紹介することにしよう。)

「Bob Frankston has been using the Vonage VoIP system for the last month or two. He usually uses it from his home, connected through his cable modem (along with all his other Internet traffic). He's also used it from conferences far away, through the free Internet connectivity they provide to conference attendees. I know from my own experience that cable Internet connectivity has its ups and downs, with uneven response at some times. Despite this, talking to Bob on the phone when he's connected through Vonage has been fine. The sound quality is great, and the drop outs are no more bothersome than talking on a cell phone when moving around (he does get one second and ten second silences sometimes). That's in today's world's run-of-the-mill IP connectivity, with no QOS.」

「It's already good enough to meet the "standards" of cell phones.」

「I guess QOS as measured by many telecom people isn't so important after all. At least it's not so important as to be worth messing with the simple design of IP connectivity and hobbling future advances and experimentation.」

QoSなしでもVoIPの通話品質は確保できる

QoSなしのネットワークでVoIPを使って音声品質は十分、仮に今は完璧ではなくてもすぐに技術進歩で大丈夫になると言う。

結論は、

「So, back to VoIP and QOS. Trying to simulate the old system, and holding back the new in the mistaken belief that innovation won't be accepted without meeting the "standards" of the old, is probably the wrong thing. We don't know how people will eventually make best use of VoIP, but if history is a guide, it will be better in many important ways than what went before, and not just in cost.」

この文章はなかなかいい。記憶しておくにいい文章と思う。VoIP以外の新しい技術を語るときにも使える文章だ。

ちなみに、このBLOGで紹介しているVoIPシステムは、Vonageである。

Vonageは固定電話に対するナップスター

Accenture Technology LabsのGary Booneが、そのBLOGの中で、Vonageについて、

「Vonage could become the Napster of the telecom industry,」

というメモを書いている。ナップスターにおける破壊対象産業は音楽産業だったが、この場合はテレコム産業というわけ。

「Here's a glowing review of Vonage's VOIP service and an article reporting that the company may partner with Earthlink and sell through Radio Shack. For $40/month, you have unlimited long-distance to anywhere in the US and Canada. They send you a box to plug your phone into, so you can use your existing phones.」

同社はEarthlinkと組んで、1カ月40ドルの時間無制限・長距離(米国・カナダ)通信サービスを提供する。
